Fitting the GridZeno Dongle
Here is what is the same for every inverter: what you need, how you plug in the dongle, power it and connect it to your WiFi. Which port, which pins and which cable your inverter needs is described in the guide for your inverter.
What you need
Check that you have everything before you go out to the inverter.
- GridZeno Dongle
- With antenna. The device ID is on the label, e.g. GZ-A1B2C3. You'll need it later.
- Modbus cable
- Goes from the dongle to the inverter's communication port. Not included, but can be bought as an extra. For many models one end needs a new RJ45 plug, and then you need an RJ45 crimping tool. The guide for your model says so.
- USB power
- The dongle uses at most 1 A. Any USB charger with 5 V and at least 1 A works. You also need a cable with USB-C and a socket nearby. Charger and cable can be bought as extras.
- Network
- Wi-Fi coverage at the inverter, or a network cable to your router.
- A phone
- To connect the dongle to your network.
Plug in the dongle
Cable first, power last.
- 1Find the communication port
Which port, which pins and which cable it's depends on the inverter. Find your model under Installation, where each model has its own guide. If it isn't there, write to us with the model name.
- 2Plug in the Modbus cable
Plug one end into the inverter's communication port, as the guide for your model shows, and the other into the dongle. Some models need the cable re-crimped or the wires in a terminal block; the guide says so.
- 3Place the dongle
In a dry place close to the inverter, so the cable doesn't hang from the plug. The closer to the router, the better the Wi-Fi.
- 4Connect power
Plug the USB cable into the dongle and the charger into the socket. The dongle starts by itself.
Connect the dongle to your Wi-Fi
The first time, the dongle makes its own small Wi-Fi network, which you connect to with your phone.
- 1Language and numberChoose a language. Note down the dongle's number.
- 2Your Wi-FiChoose your network, and enter the password.
- 3ConnectingThe dongle checks that it can reach GridZeno.
- 4Connection OKPress Go to GridZeno.
- 1Connect the phone to the dongle
Open Wi-Fi on your phone, and choose the network GridZeno-Setup- followed by the dongle's number without GZ-, e.g. GridZeno-Setup-A1B2C3. The network has no password.
- 2The setup page opens
It normally opens by itself. If it doesn't, open the browser, and go to 192.168.4.1.
- 3Choose a language, and note down the number
The dongle's number is at the top. You use it when you pair the dongle in the web app.
- 4Choose your Wi-Fi
Choose your network from the list, enter the password, and press Save and connect.
- 5Wait while the dongle connects
It connects to your Wi-Fi and checks that it can reach GridZeno. It takes a few seconds. If it doesn't succeed, check the password, and try again.
- 6Go to GridZeno
When it says Connection OK, press Go to GridZeno, switch your phone back to your own network, and log in.
- 7Choose your inverter in Welcome
Welcome pairs the dongle with your account, and there you choose your inverter and how the dongle is connected to it. Press Save inverter, and the dongle fetches its setup and reads the inverter. See Pair the dongle.
The dongle's own page
For changing the Wi-Fi without starting over.
When the dongle is on your Wi-Fi, it has a small page you can open from a phone or computer on the same network. The easiest way is the button Open the dongle's page under Dongle in the web app, which knows the dongle's address. You log in with the dongle's number.
- Status
- Whether the dongle has a connection to the inverter and to GridZeno, what it's reading right now, and the plan it has received.
- Network
- Change Wi-Fi: press Search for networks, choose the network, enter the password, and press Connect.
- Settings
- The inverter isn't chosen here but in GridZeno, under System, Change inverter. The dongle fetches its setup from there.
- Home Assistant
- The connections to your Home Assistant. See Electric car and Home Assistant.
If the Wi-Fi or the internet disappears
The dongle copes by itself in most cases.
- No Wi-Fi for 5 minutes
- The dongle opens its own network again, GridZeno-Setup- and the number, so you can choose a new Wi-Fi. At the same time it tries your saved Wi-Fi every 2 minutes and goes back to it by itself when it responds.
- New router or new password
- Connect the phone to the dongle's own network, choose your new Wi-Fi, and enter the password. The dongle restarts and reports in again.
- The internet is down
- The dongle follows the plan it has for 45 minutes, and then does what you have chosen under Automatic: carries on with the plan for as long as it lasts, or lets the inverter run on its own.
- The power has been off
- The dongle starts again by itself. If the router is slower to start, the dongle finds it when it responds.
The page Dongle in the web app shows whether the dongle is running, and what to do if it isn't. See Dongle.
Start over
If something has gone completely wrong.
Hold the button on the dongle down for 8 seconds. The dongle then forgets its settings and starts again with its own setup network, exactly as the first time. After that, you follow the steps above again.
If the dongle doesn't show up in the web app again afterwards, write to us with the dongle's number.
Ready for cheaper
power?
Check whether your inverter fits, and let the plan charge the battery and sell power in the right quarter hours.
