Install GridZeno on Solplanet hybrid with RS485 cable.
Solplanet's hybrid inverters have an RJ45 port for monitoring from other manufacturers, Monitor (on the TH: Third_485). Here the GridZeno dongle talks directly to the inverter with Modbus RTU, without an Ai-Logger. A is on pin 1, B on pin 2 and GND on pin 3, so the cable is made with only the three wires that are needed.
- Applies to
- ASW H-T2, H-T3, H-T2/T3-DG, SH 8-10 kW and TH
- Connection
- Network cable with RJ45 plug
- Time
- About 30 minutes
The battery is controlled with the inverter's operating mode. The dongle saves your own mode and puts it back afterwards. What GridZeno can do on Solplanet hybrid with RS485 cable
How the dongle recognises it: The storage block from input 1600 can be read, so it's a hybrid. The battery is there when 1606 is 0x000A, and a second battery when 31740 is 0x000A.
What you need
- GridZeno Dongle
- The device ID is on the label, e.g. GZ-A1B2C3.
- Cable
- A shielded network cable, re-crimped at the inverter end with only three wires.
- RJ45 plug and crimping tool
- For the inverter end.
- Screwdriver
- For the communication cover's four M4 screws.
- USB power
- A 5 V USB charger and a cable with USB-C.
The port
On the communication board behind the inverter's communication cover. On the H-T2 and H-T3 it is RJ45 port 3 (COM2), on the DG port 3 just above the TCP/IP port, on the SH 8-10 kW CN707, which the cable reaches through the cable gland COM1 behind the lower front cover, and on the TH CN407 (COM3).
- Port
- Monitor (on the TH: Third_485)
- Pin 1 A, RS485A
- Pin 2 B, RS485B
- Pin 3 GND, GND
The cable
A network cable where the inverter end is crimped with only three wires: the dongle's A on pin 1, B on pin 2 and GND on pin 3. The other positions in the connector are empty. An ordinary straight cable doesn't work here.
| Dongle end | Inverter end |
|---|---|
| Dongle pin 4, blue (A) | Solplanet pin 1, RS485A |
| Dongle pin 5, white/blue (B) | Solplanet pin 2, RS485B |
| Dongle pin 3, white/green (GND) | Solplanet pin 3, GND |
| The other wires | Cut off and insulated |
Settings
On the inverter
- Modbus address
- Solplanet's Modbus protocol uses address 3 from the factory. The manuals mention neither address nor baud rate. On the DG, the address can be changed in the Solplanet app under Inverter configuration, Modbus address modification.
In GridZeno's Welcome
The inverter is chosen in GridZeno: in Welcome the first time, and later under System, Change inverter. The dongle fetches its setup from there.
- Manufacturer and model
- Solplanet, Hybrid (RS485)
- Connection
- By cable (RS485)
- RS485 settings
- Keep the default GridZeno suggests for Solplanet (address 3).
Step by step
Each step has a small drawing that shows what to do.
- 1Turn off, and open the communication cover
Switch off the AC breaker, and lock it. Set the DC switch to OFF, and lock it. Wait until the LEDs are off. Unscrew the communication cover's four M4 screws. On the SH 8-10 kW, you open the lower front cover instead.
- 2Pass the cable through the cable gland
Cut off the connector at the inverter end, and pass the cable through a cable gland in the cover. Leave the plug in the holes you don't use.
- 3Crimp the inverter end with three wires
Crimp on a new connector with blue (A) on pin 1, white/blue (B) on pin 2 and white/green (GND) on pin 3. The other wires are cut off and insulated.
- 4Plug the connector into Monitor
Press the connector into the Monitor port until it clicks. On the TH, the port is called Third_485. The ports beside it are for parallel operation and battery.
- 5Close the cover again
Screw the cover tight, and tighten the cable gland so the cable is sealed.
- 6Plug the RJ45 end into the dongle
The cable's other end goes into the dongle's RS485 port. Place the dongle somewhere dry and close to the inverter, so the cable doesn't hang from the plug.
- 7Connect power to the dongle
Plug the USB-C cable into the dongle and the charger into a socket. The dongle starts by itself. It gets power from the charger, not from the inverter.
- 8Connect the dongle to the network
Over Wi-Fi: the first time, the dongle creates its own Wi-Fi, GridZeno-Setup- followed by the last characters of the device ID. Connect your phone to it, choose your own network, enter the password, and press Save and connect. When it says Connection OK, press Go to GridZeno. Over cable (LAN): plug a network cable from the router into the dongle's network port.
- 9Log in, and choose your inverter
Log in to GridZeno. Welcome pairs the dongle with its device ID. Then choose your inverter, Solplanet Hybrid (RS485), and the connection By cable (RS485). Press Save inverter, and the dongle fetches its setup and reads the inverter.
The dongle's own setup is described with screenshots in The user guide, and the pairing in Getting started.
