Install GridZeno on Solplanet ASW grid inverter with RS485 cable.
Solplanet's grid inverters without a battery have RS485 in an RJ45 port, COM. Here the GridZeno dongle talks directly to the inverter with Modbus RTU, without an Ai-Logger. A is on pin 1, B on pin 2 and GND on pin 4, so the cable is made with only the three wires that are needed. The energy meter has its own port.
- Applies to
- ASW S-G2, 5-10k-S, LT-G2, LT-G2-Pro, 25-40K-LT-G3, 40-50K-LT-G2 Pro, ASW-T and ASW-S
- Connection
- Network cable with RJ45 plug
- Time
- About 25 minutes
A grid inverter without a battery. GridZeno shows the solar production and lowers the inverter's output at negative prices. What GridZeno can do on Solplanet ASW grid inverter with RS485 cable
How the dongle recognises it: No storage block from input 1600, or the model code 1-5 in 31073: a grid inverter. The dongle doesn't tell the series apart; input 1000 says whether it's three-phase.
GridZeno Dongle for Solplanet ASW grid inverter with RS485 cable
What you need
- GridZeno Dongle
- The device ID is on the label, e.g. GZ-A1B2C3.
- Cable
- A shielded network cable (Cat5e), re-crimped at the inverter end with only three wires.
- RJ45 plug and crimping tool
- For the inverter end. The waterproof RS485 connector is in the accessory bag or is available as an accessory.
- USB power
- A 5 V USB charger and a cable with USB-C.
The port
On the underside of the inverter under a cap or a cover. On the LT-G2 and LT-G3 there are two RJ45 ports, COM1 and COM2, with the same pins. The Wi-Fi stick and the energy meter each have their own port.
- Port
- COM (RJ45, RS485)
- Pin 1 A, TX_RS485A
- Pin 2 B, TX_RS485B
- Pin 4 GND, GND
- Pin 7 Must not be connected, +7V on ASW-T and ASW-S
- Pin 8 Must not be connected, +7V on ASW-T and ASW-S
The cable
A network cable where the inverter end is crimped with only three wires: the dongle's A on pin 1, B on pin 2 and GND on pin 4. The other positions in the connector are empty. An ordinary straight cable doesn't work here.
| Dongle end | Inverter end |
|---|---|
| Dongle pin 4, blue (A) | Solplanet pin 1, TX_RS485A |
| Dongle pin 5, white/blue (B) | Solplanet pin 2, TX_RS485B |
| Dongle pin 3, white/green (GND) | Solplanet pin 4, GND |
| The other wires | Cut off and insulated, especially those on pins 7 and 8 |
Settings
On the inverter
- Modbus address
- Solplanet's Modbus protocol uses address 3 from the factory. The manuals mention neither address nor baud rate.
In GridZeno's Welcome
The inverter is chosen in GridZeno: in Welcome the first time, and later under System, Change inverter. The dongle fetches its setup from there.
- Manufacturer and model
- Solplanet, ASW (RS485)
- Connection
- By cable (RS485)
- RS485 settings
- Keep the default GridZeno suggests for Solplanet (address 3).
Step by step
Each step has a small drawing that shows what to do.
- 1Pass the cable through the waterproof connector
Turn off the inverter first: switch off the AC breaker and lock it, set the DC switch to OFF and lock it, and wait until the LEDs are off. Cut off the connector at the inverter end, and pass the cable through the waterproof RS485 connector or the cover's M25 cable gland.
- 2Crimp the inverter end with three wires
Crimp on a new connector with blue (A) on pin 1, white/blue (B) on pin 2 and white/green (GND) on pin 4. The other wires are cut off and insulated, especially those on pins 7 and 8.
- 3Plug the connector into COM
Unscrew the cap from the COM port, press the connector in until it clicks, and tighten the waterproof connector. On the LT-G2 and LT-G3 you can use COM1 or COM2.
- 4Plug the RJ45 end into the dongle
The cable's other end goes into the dongle's RS485 port. Place the dongle somewhere dry and close to the inverter, so the cable doesn't hang from the plug.
- 5Connect power to the dongle
Plug the USB-C cable into the dongle and the charger into a socket. The dongle starts by itself. It gets power from the charger, not from the inverter.
- 6Connect the dongle to the network
Over Wi-Fi: the first time, the dongle creates its own Wi-Fi, GridZeno-Setup- followed by the last characters of the device ID. Connect your phone to it, choose your own network, enter the password, and press Save and connect. When it says Connection OK, press Go to GridZeno. Over cable (LAN): plug a network cable from the router into the dongle's network port.
- 7Log in, and choose your inverter
Log in to GridZeno. Welcome pairs the dongle with its device ID. Then choose your inverter, Solplanet ASW (RS485), and the connection By cable (RS485). Press Save inverter, and the dongle fetches its setup and reads the inverter.
The dongle's own setup is described with screenshots in The user guide, and the pairing in Getting started.
Take care
