Install GridZeno on SolaX X3-Ultra / X3-AELIO.
X3-Ultra and the larger X3-AELIO are SolaX's three-phase hybrid inverters with a battery. The communication ports are gathered in the COM 1 connector, six RJ45 ports in one holder. The dongle goes in the RS485 port, where SolaX has set pins 1, 2, 7 and 8 aside for equipment from other manufacturers. There's no GND in the port, so the cable is made with only two wires.
- Applies to
- X3-ULT-15K to 30K, X3-ULT-10K/15K-GLV and X3-AELIO-36K to 61K
- Connection
- Network cable with RJ45 plug
- Time
- About 30 minutes
An X3-AELIO is controlled with SolaX' remote control, which stops by itself if the dongle goes silent. GridZeno can read an X3-Ultra but not control it yet. What GridZeno can do on SolaX X3-Ultra / X3-AELIO
How the dongle recognises it: X3-Ultra: the serial number starts with H3BC, H3BD, H3BF or H3BG. X3-AELIO: the serial number starts with 8021 and is read as GEN5.
What you need
- GridZeno Dongle
- The device ID is on the label, e.g. GZ-A1B2C3.
- Cable
- A network cable that's re-crimped at the inverter end with only two wires.
- RJ45 plug and crimping tool
- For the inverter end. RJ45 plugs come in the inverter's accessory bag.
- USB power
- A 5 V USB charger and a cable with USB-C.
The port
On the underside of the inverter. COM 1 is a connector with six RJ45 ports in a cable holder: Parallel-1, Parallel-2, BMS-1, BMS-2, RS485 and DRM. The RS485 port is marked on the holder.
- Port
- RS485 in COM 1
- Pin 1 A, REMOTE_485A
- Pin 2 B, REMOTE_485B
The cable
A network cable where the inverter end is crimped with only two wires: the dongle's A on pin 1 and B on pin 2. The rest of the positions in the plug are empty. An ordinary straight cable doesn't work here. The cable has to go through the COM 1 connector's coupling nut before the plug is crimped on.
| Dongle end | Inverter end |
|---|---|
| Dongle pin 4, blue (A) | SolaX pin 1, REMOTE_485A |
| Dongle pin 5, white/blue (B) | SolaX pin 2, REMOTE_485B |
| The other wires | Cut off and insulated |
Settings
On the inverter
- Menu > Setting > Advance Setting > Modbus
- Read off Baud Rate and Address. The dongle must have the same. The manual shows 19200 and 1 on X3-Ultra and 9600 and 1 on X3-AELIO.
In GridZeno's Welcome
The inverter is chosen in GridZeno: in Welcome the first time, and later under System, Change inverter. The dongle fetches its setup from there.
- Manufacturer and model
- SolaX, X3-Ultra
- Connection
- By cable (RS485)
- RS485 settings
- The same baud rate and address as the inverter, 8N1. If the inverter is set to 19200, set 19200 on the dongle. X3-AELIO is set to 9600 at the factory.
Step by step
Each step has a small drawing that shows what to do.
- 1Read the baud rate and address
In the display, go to Menu, Setting, Advance Setting, Modbus. It requires the installer code, which is 2014 from the factory. Note down Baud Rate and Address: the dongle must have the same.
- 2Remove the COM 1 connector
Hold the latches on both sides of the COM 1 connector, and pull it out of the inverter. Unscrew the coupling nut, and take out a sealing plug.
- 3Pass the cable through the connector's parts
Pass the cable through the coupling nut, the sealing bush and the connector housing, in that order. Leave the plugs in the holes you aren't using.
- 4Crimp the inverter end with two wires
Cut off the plug at the inverter end. Crimp a new plug on with blue (A) on pin 1 and white/blue (B) on pin 2. The other wires are cut off and insulated.
- 5Plug it into RS485
Press the RJ45 plug into the position marked RS485 in the cable holder until it clicks.
- 6Put the COM 1 connector back in
Plug the COM 1 connector into the inverter until it clicks, and pull gently on the cable to check that it's secure. Tighten the coupling nut.
- 7Plug the RJ45 end into the dongle
The cable's other end goes into the dongle's RS485 port. Place the dongle somewhere dry and close to the inverter, so the cable doesn't hang from the plug.
- 8Connect power to the dongle
Plug the USB-C cable into the dongle and the charger into a socket. The dongle starts by itself. It gets power from the charger, not from the inverter.
- 9Connect the dongle to the network
Over Wi-Fi: the first time, the dongle creates its own Wi-Fi, GridZeno-Setup- followed by the last characters of the device ID. Connect your phone to it, choose your own network, enter the password, and press Save and connect. When it says Connection OK, press Go to GridZeno. Over cable (LAN): plug a network cable from the router into the dongle's network port.
- 10Log in, and choose your inverter
Log in to GridZeno. Welcome pairs the dongle with its device ID. Then choose your inverter, SolaX X3-Ultra, and the connection By cable (RS485). Set the inverter's baud rate and address under RS485 settings. Press Save inverter, and the dongle fetches its setup and reads the inverter.
The dongle's own setup is described with screenshots in The user guide, and the pairing in Getting started.
Take care
