The dongle controls the battery with Growatt's VPP protocol.

Charge, hold and sell

A command with the battery's power and a duration. The dongle removes it itself when the block ends, and after a restart.

What it requires

VPP V2.01 in the inverter's firmware. Without it, GridZeno can only read the inverter and limit the sale.

Stop selling at negative prices

The inverter's export limit is set quarter by quarter by the selling price, but only where the installer has turned export limiting on. GridZeno only lowers a limit that's already set and never turns it on or off.

Another controller

If another system already has a VPP command on the inverter, the dongle leaves it alone and doesn't control the inverter.

Manual

When the control is on Manual, the dongle changes nothing on the inverter. It reads, and if GridZeno has changed something, it puts the inverter's own settings back, including your own charge limits.

The type code 5400, which Growatt's VPP V2.01 gives only to the MOD TL3-XH and MID TL3-XH. It's always the battery family, even if the battery is asleep when the dongle starts.

What it requires

VPP V2.01 in the inverter's firmware (holding 30099 = 201).

Lowest charge level

Holding 3067. Set above the battery's charge level, the inverter charges up to it, so the dongle raises it only when the charge level is above the new limit, and lowers it straight away. There's no register for the highest.

The battery's capacity

If the VPP protocol's BMS block (from 31210) doesn't answer, the capacity is taken from input 3200 in Ah times the pack's voltage (3169), counted in whole modules of 51.2 V. A MOD-XH showed 51 Ah at 204.8 V, so 10.24 kWh.

What the dongle allows for

• A hold at 0 % is close to still, but not quite: the Home Assistant integration measured ±140 W on a MOD.

How it differs from MID TL3-XH

MOD TL3-XH is the smaller one: MOD 3000-10KTL3-XH. MID TL3-XH covers MID 11K-30KTL3-XH and MID 8000-15KTL3-XH L.

Same type code, 5400, and the same control. The dongle knows it's a MOD because you choose MOD when you set up GridZeno.

On MOD the 30-pin COM connector sits between the battery connections and the USB port. On MID it sits between the USB port and AC.

How it differs from its neighbours

• Growatt MOD TL3-HU: The MOD TL3-HU has the type code 5401 and is connected in the RJ45 port Para.out.
• Growatt MID TL3-XH: The MID TL3-XH has the same type code and is controlled the same way. You choose MID instead of MOD when you set up GridZeno.
• Growatt MOD TL3-X: The MOD TL3-X has no battery and the type code 5002.

For the installer: the registers

What the dongle uses over Modbus, if you want to follow along or troubleshoot. Don't change the registers yourself while control is set to Automatic.

Control

The VPP command in 30407-30410: 30408 is the duration, 30409 the power in per cent, 30410 = 1 when charging. 30100 = 1 turns it on. The dongle writes in the order 30408, 30409, 30410, 30100, 30407 and removes it with 30407 = 0, 30409 = 0, 30410 back and 30100 = 0.

Holding 30099 shows the VPP version: 201 is V2.01.

123 in 0.1 %. 122 is the installer's switch and is never written.

Where

The wide 30-pin connector on the underside between the battery connections and the USB port. The same connector is used for the energy meter, battery, SYN box and DRM, so there may already be wires in it.
