Installation · Solplanet

Install GridZeno on Solplanet 75-125K-LT with RS485 cable.

The large ASW75-125K-LT have two RS485 connectors, COM2 and COM3. Solplanet has set COM2 aside for equipment from other manufacturers, so the Ai-Dongle in COM1 and any chain on COM3 can stay in place. The GridZeno dongle is connected with three wires in the COM2 connector.

A grid inverter without a battery. GridZeno shows the solar production and lowers the inverter's output at negative prices. What GridZeno can do on Solplanet 75-125K-LT with RS485 cable

How the dongle recognises it: No storage block from input 1600, or the model code 1-5 in 31073: a three-phase grid inverter. The dongle treats it like the other ASW grid inverters.

What you need

GridZeno Dongle
The device ID is on the label, e.g. GZ-A1B2C3.
Cable
GridZeno's Modbus cable with one end cut off, or another twisted cable with three conductors.
Ferrules and crimping tool
Wire ferrules for the three wires.
Torque screwdriver
The terminals are tightened to 1.2 Nm.
USB power
A 5 V USB charger and a cable with USB-C.
02

The port

On the underside of the inverter by COM1 (Ai-Dongle) and COM3. The connector is a waterproof connector with an 8-pin screw terminal inside.

Port
COM2 (8-pin connector, for 3rd party)
Pin 1: Power, +8VA_SELV.
Pin 2: GND, GND_SELV, white/green wire.
Pin 3: A, RS485A, blue wire.
Pin 4: B, RS485B, white/blue wire.
Pin 5: Power, +8VA_SELV.
Pin 6: GND, GND_SELV.
Pin 7: A, RS485A.
Pin 8: B, RS485B.
The COM2 connector, with the terminals numbered as Solplanet numbers them. Pins 1 and 5 carry 8 V and must not be connected. Compare the numbers on the connector with the drawing before you screw the wires in. The numbers are on the plug.
  • Pin 3 A, RS485A
  • Pin 4 B, RS485B
  • Pin 2 GND, GND_SELV
  • Pin 1 Must not be connected, +8VA_SELV
  • Pin 5 Must not be connected, +8VA_SELV
03

The cable

A network cable with an RJ45 plug for the dongle at one end and the other end cut off. At the inverter end, only the three wires from pins 4, 5 and 3 are used, with ferrules fitted.

Modbus address
Solplanet's Modbus protocol uses address 3 from the factory. The manual mentions neither address nor baud rate.

In GridZeno's Welcome

The inverter is chosen in GridZeno: in Welcome the first time, and later under System, Change inverter. The dongle fetches its setup from there.

Step by step

Each step has a small drawing that shows what to do.

  1. 1
Switch off, and remove the COM2 connector

Switch off the AC breaker, and lock it. Set the DC switch to OFF, and lock it. Wait until the LEDs have gone out. Take the dust cover off COM2, or press the connector's lock, and pull it out.

  2. 2
Pass the cable through the connector's parts

Unscrew the nut, take out the sealing ring and the insert, and pass the cut end of the cable through the nut and the seal.

  3. 3
    Prepare the cable

Strip 33 mm of the sheath and 7.5 mm of the three wires from pin 4 (blue), pin 5 (white/blue) and pin 3 (white/green), and crimp ferrules on. Insulate the other wires.

  4. 4
Screw the wires into pins 3, 4 and 2

Blue (A) goes in pin 3, white/blue (B) in pin 4 and white/green (GND) in pin 2. Tighten to 1.2 Nm. Pins 1 and 5 carry 8 V: don't touch them. Solplanet draws the bottom row in two directions, so follow the numbers on the connector itself.

  5. 5
    Plug the connector into COM2

Assemble the connector, screw the nut on, and press the connector into COM2 until it clicks. If the inverter is the last one on the cable, set the DIP switch for the terminating resistor to ON.

  6. 6
Plug the RJ45 end into the dongle

The cable's other end goes into the dongle's RS485 port. Place the dongle somewhere dry and close to the inverter, so the cable doesn't hang from the plug.

  7. 7
    Connect power to the dongle

Plug the USB-C cable into the dongle and the charger into a socket. The dongle starts by itself. It gets power from the charger, not from the inverter.

  8. 8
Connect the dongle to the network

Over Wi-Fi: the first time, the dongle creates its own Wi-Fi, GridZeno-Setup- followed by the last characters of the device ID. Connect your phone to it, choose your own network, enter the password, and press Save and connect. When it says Connection OK, press Go to GridZeno. Over cable (LAN): plug a network cable from the router into the dongle's network port.

  9. 9
Log in, and choose your inverter

Log in to GridZeno. Welcome pairs the dongle with its device ID. Then choose your inverter, Solplanet ASW (RS485), and the connection By cable (RS485). Press Save inverter, and the dongle fetches its setup and reads the inverter.

The dongle's own setup is described with screenshots in The user guide, and the pairing in Getting started.

Take care

Pins 1 and 5 in COM2 carry 8 V. Never connect anything from the dongle to them.
COM3 is for other inverters, the Ai-logger and the energy meter. The dongle goes in COM2.
Solplanet doesn't state the baud rate in the manual. If the inverter doesn't answer, write to us.
The inverter is large and heavy and sits on a high-voltage system. The work should be done by a qualified person, such as an authorised electrician.

What GridZeno can control on Solplanet 75-125K-LT with RS485 cable, and how, is on the page about Solplanet 75-125K-LT with RS485 cable. If you're stuck, write to us with the model name.
