Installation · SolaX

Install GridZeno on SolaX MIC G3 / PRO G3.

MIC G3 and PRO G3 are SolaX's three-phase grid inverters without a battery. The dongle's firmware can't read them yet, so GridZeno shows nothing from them today. Once the firmware can, GridZeno can show the production and, where the protocol allows it, limit export. RS485 is on pins 4 and 5 of the RJ45 port COM1, and again on pins 1 and 2. The energy meter has its own port, COM2. Pins 7 and 8 are an output, so the inverter end is crimped with only the two wires that are used.

You can connect the dongle by this guide, but it reads nothing from the inverter until its firmware can. GridZeno Dongle for SolaX MIC G3 / PRO G3

What you need

GridZeno Dongle
The device ID is on the label, e.g. GZ-A1B2C3.
Cable
A network cable that's re-crimped at the inverter end with only two wires.
RJ45 plug and crimping tool
For the inverter end. The plug and the waterproof connector housing are included in the accessory bag.
USB power
A 5 V USB charger and a cable with USB-C.
02

The port

On the underside of the inverter, by DONGLE and AC. COM1 and COM2 are two waterproof RJ45 ports. The dongle goes in COM1.

Port

Pin 1: A, RS485-A.
Pin 2: B, RS485-B.
Pin 3: Input, DI+/REF GEN.
Pin 4: A, RS485-A, blue wire.
Pin 5: B, RS485-B, white/blue wire.
Pin 6: Input, DI-/DRM0.
Pin 7: Output, DO+.
Pin 8: Output, DO-.
The COM1 port, as SolaX numbers the pins. Pins 1 and 4 are both RS485-A, pins 2 and 5 both RS485-B. The port has no GND. The plug shown with the contacts facing you and the locking tab at the back: pin 1 is furthest to the left.
  • Pin 4 A, RS485-A
  • Pin 5 B, RS485-B
  • Pin 7 Must not be connected, DO+
  • Pin 8 Must not be connected, DO-
03

The cable

A network cable where the inverter end is crimped with only two wires: the dongle's A on pin 4 and B on pin 5. The rest of the positions in the plug are empty. The port has no GND, so the white/green wire isn't used. An ordinary straight cable doesn't work here: it would put the dongle's GND on pin 3, an input.

In GridZeno's Welcome

The inverter is chosen in GridZeno: in Welcome the first time, and later under System, Change inverter. The dongle fetches its setup from there.

Step by step

Each step has a small drawing that shows what to do.

  1. 1
    Check the address

In the display's settings, go to RS485 CommAddr. The address must be 1, as from the factory.

  2. 2
Pass the cable through the connector housing

Switch off the inverter first: switch off the AC breaker, set the DC switch to OFF, and wait 5 minutes. Cut off the plug at the inverter end, and pass the cable through the waterproof connector housing from the accessory bag.

  3. 3
Crimp the inverter end with two wires

Crimp the RJ45 plug from the accessory bag on with blue (A) on pin 4 and white/blue (B) on pin 5. The other wires are cut off and insulated.

  4. 4
    Remove the cap from COM1

Remove the cap from the COM1 port on the underside.

  5. 5
    Plug the connector into COM1

Push the plug into the COM1 port until it clicks. Tighten the connector housing and then the nut, so the port is sealed.

  6. 6
Plug the RJ45 end into the dongle

The cable's other end goes into the dongle's RS485 port. Place the dongle somewhere dry and close to the inverter, so the cable doesn't hang from the plug.

  7. 7
    Connect power to the dongle

Plug the USB-C cable into the dongle and the charger into a socket. The dongle starts by itself. It gets power from the charger, not from the inverter.

  8. 8
Connect the dongle to the network

Over Wi-Fi: the first time, the dongle creates its own Wi-Fi, GridZeno-Setup- followed by the last characters of the device ID. Connect your phone to it, choose your own network, enter the password, and press Save and connect. When it says Connection OK, press Go to GridZeno. Over cable (LAN): plug a network cable from the router into the dongle's network port.

  9. 9
Log in, and choose your inverter

Log in to GridZeno. Welcome pairs the dongle with its device ID. Then choose your inverter, SolaX MIC G3 / PRO G3, and the connection By cable (RS485). Press Save inverter, and the dongle fetches its setup and reads the inverter. If the dongle gets no answer, go to System, press Change inverter, and set the baud rate to 19200 under RS485 settings.

The dongle's own setup is described with screenshots in The user guide, and the pairing in Getting started.

Take care

Pins 7 and 8 in COM1 are an output (DO), and pin 6 is DRM0. An ordinary network cable connects all eight pins, which is why the inverter end must be crimped with only the two wires.
Pins 1 and 2 are used when several inverters are connected to each other. If there's already a cable in COM1, write to us before you connect the dongle.
COM2 is the port for the energy meter and the current clamp. The dongle doesn't go in it.
COM1 isn't a network port. Never plug it into a router or switch.

SolaX MIC G3 / PRO G3 isn't on the compatibility list yet. If you're stuck, write to us with the model name.
