Installation · Huawei

Install GridZeno on Huawei SUN2000 8-23KTL.

The older SUN2000 8-23KTL from 2017 has neither Smart Dongle nor Wi-Fi, but a display and two waterproof RJ45 ports, RS485 IN and RS485 OUT. Huawei has A on pin 1, B on pin 2 and ground on pin 3, so the cable is made with only the three wires that are needed.

SUN2000-8KTL, 10KTL, 12KTL, 15KTL, 17KTL, 20KTL and 23KTL

A grid inverter without a battery. GridZeno shows solar, consumption and grid and lowers the inverter's export limit at negative prices. What GridZeno can do on Huawei SUN2000 8-23KTL

How the dongle recognises it: The model name in 30000 starts with SUN2000, and the dongle has read that there's no battery.

What you need

GridZeno Dongle
The device ID is on the label, e.g. GZ-A1B2C3.
Cable
A shielded network cable, re-crimped at the inverter end with only three wires.
RJ45 plug and crimping tool
For the inverter end, inside the waterproof connector from the accessory bag.
USB power
A 5 V USB charger and a cable with USB-C.

The port

On the underside of the inverter. RS485 IN and RS485 OUT are two waterproof RJ45 ports with the same pins. OUT continues to a possible next inverter.

RS485 IN
Pin 1: A, RS485A, blue wire.
Pin 2: B, RS485B, white/blue wire.
Pin 3: GND, PGND, white/green wire.
Pin 4: A, RS485A.
Pin 5: B, RS485B.
Pin 6: GND, PGND.
Pin 7: GND, PGND.
Pin 8: GND, PGND.
The RS485 IN port, as Huawei numbers the pins. Pins 1 and 4 are A, pins 2 and 5 are B, and pins 3, 6, 7 and 8 are PGND. The plug shown with the contacts facing you and the locking tab at the back: pin 1 is furthest to the left.
  • Pin 1 A, RS485A
  • Pin 2 B, RS485B
  • Pin 3 GND, PGND
03

The cable

A network cable where the inverter end is crimped with only three wires: the dongle's A on pin 1, B on pin 2 and GND on pin 3. The other positions in the connector are empty. An ordinary straight cable doesn't work here.

Step by step

Each step has a small drawing that shows what to do.

  1. 1
    Check the RS485 settings

Log in on the display as Advanced User with 000001, and go to Settings, Comm. Param. and RS485. Protocol must be set to Modbus, Address to 1, Baud Rate to 9600 and Parity to None, as from the factory.

  2. 2
Pass the cable through the waterproof connector

Turn off the inverter first: choose Power-Off under Power-On/Off on the display, switch off the AC breaker, and set DC SWITCH to OFF. Take apart the waterproof RJ45 connector from the accessory bag, cut off the connector at the inverter end, and pass the cable through the connector's parts.

  3. 3
Crimp the inverter end with three wires

Crimp on a new connector with blue (A) on pin 1, white/blue (B) on pin 2 and white/green (GND) on pin 3. The other wires are cut off and insulated.

  4. 4
Plug the connector into RS485 IN

Press the connector into the RS485 IN port on the underside until it clicks, and tighten the waterproof connector.

  5. 5
Plug the RJ45 end into the dongle

The cable's other end goes into the dongle's RS485 port. Place the dongle somewhere dry and close to the inverter, so the cable doesn't hang from the plug.

  6. 6
    Connect power to the dongle

Plug the USB-C cable into the dongle and the charger into a socket. The dongle starts by itself. It gets power from the charger, not from the inverter.

  7. 7
Connect the dongle to the network

Over Wi-Fi: the first time, the dongle creates its own Wi-Fi, GridZeno-Setup- followed by the last characters of the device ID. Connect your phone to it, choose your own network, enter the password, and press Save and connect. When it says Connection OK, press Go to GridZeno. Over cable (LAN): plug a network cable from the router into the dongle's network port.

  8. 8
Log in, and choose your inverter

Log in to GridZeno. Welcome pairs the dongle with its device ID. Then choose your inverter, Huawei SUN2000 (RS485), and the connection By cable (RS485). Press Save inverter, and the dongle fetches its setup and reads the inverter.

The dongle's own setup is described with screenshots in The user guide, and the pairing in Getting started.

Take care

If the inverter is the last in a chain, Match Resistance must be set to Connect under Settings, Comm. Param. and RS485. If there are several inverters, each has its own address.
If the inverter is connected to a Huawei SmartLogger or NetEco on RS485, that's already the master. Write to us before you connect the dongle.
SUN2000-28KTL is for a 480 V grid behind a transformer and isn't covered by this guide.

What GridZeno can control on Huawei SUN2000 8-23KTL, and how, is on the page about Huawei SUN2000 8-23KTL. If you're stuck, write to us with the model name.
