The dongle controls the battery with Sofar's passive mode.

Charge, hold and sell

In passive mode the dongle sets the battery's power. If the dongle goes silent, the inverter goes back by itself to the mode it was in before.

Stop selling at negative prices

The inverter's export limit is set quarter by quarter by the selling price, but only where the installer has turned export limiting on. GridZeno only lowers a limit that's already set and never turns it on or off.

Battery limits

Your lowest state of charge is written as the inverter's depth of discharge.

Applies to

Sofar's G3 models. If the inverter is in an off-grid mode, the dongle only reads it.

What it requires

Inverter firmware from 2022 or later for the export limit, and an energy meter at the grid connection for grid and consumption.

Manual

When the control is on Manual, the dongle changes nothing on the inverter. It reads, and if GridZeno has changed something, it puts the inverter's own settings back, including your own charge limits.

The serial number in holding 0x0445 with the code M2 (SM2E or ZM2E): HYD 3-6K-EP, single-phase.

The battery's setup

16 registers, 0x1044-0x1053. If the inverter refuses that length, the dongle tries 19 once and remembers the one that works.

What the dongle allows for

• A HYD-EP with a BMS can read 0x1051 = 0, "lead acid". The dongle counts the battery as lithium only when the BMS protocol in 0x1046 isn't 0.
• Some firmware versions refuse 0x1184-0x118C outside passive mode. The dongle writes the timeout and the block first and then 0x1110 = 3.

How it differs from its neighbours

• Sofar Solar hybrid: The three-phase HYD 5-20KTL-3PH is controlled the same way, but has 19 registers in the battery's setup.

For the installer: the registers

What the dongle uses over Modbus, if you want to follow along or troubleshoot. Don't change the registers yourself while control is set to Automatic.

Control

Passive mode: 0x1110 = 3, and the setpoints in the block from 0x1187. Timeout in 0x1184 and 0x1185 = 1, so the inverter returns to its earlier mode if the dongle goes quiet.

Lowest charge level

The depth of discharge in 0x104D (100 minus your lowest charge level), written in the battery's setup block from 0x1044 with 0x1053 = 1.

Export limit

0x1023 (the installer's mode, never changed) and 0x1024 in 100 W, written together.

Rated power

0x06ED in 0.1 kW. Without it, the dongle doesn't control the export limit.

Where

GridZeno Dongle for Sofar HYD-EP

This one works.

Sofar HYD-EP is the inverter GridZeno has been tested on. Check that your model is under HYD 3000-EP to HYD 6000-EP, and that a battery is fitted if you want the battery controlled by the electricity price. If it still doesn't suit you, you have 100 days' free return.
