The dongle controls the battery with Sofar's passive mode.

Charge, hold and sell

In passive mode the dongle sets the battery's power. If the dongle goes silent, the inverter goes back by itself to the mode it was in before.

Stop selling at negative prices

The inverter's export limit is set quarter by quarter by the selling price, but only where the installer has turned export limiting on. GridZeno only lowers a limit that's already set and never turns it on or off.

Battery limits

Your lowest state of charge is written as the inverter's depth of discharge.

Applies to

Sofar's G3 models. If the inverter is in an off-grid mode, the dongle only reads it.

What it requires

Inverter firmware from 2022 or later for the export limit, and an energy meter at the grid connection for grid and consumption.

Manual

When the control is on Manual, the dongle changes nothing on the inverter. It reads, and if GridZeno has changed something, it puts the inverter's own settings back, including your own charge limits.

The serial number in holding 0x0445. The code P1 or P2 is HYD 5-20KTL-3PH, U1 or U2 ME 5-20KTL-3PH. A 20-character serial number with the code 051 is also HYD-3PH.

When the dongle takes over

Only from the storage modes 0, 1, 2 and 4. Off-grid (5), generator (6) and unknown modes are never controlled.

Lowest charge level

Between 10 and 90 %. At most up to the off-grid limit in 0x104E.

Firmware

The number of battery packs (0x066A) and the rated power (0x06ED) came in firmware from 2022.

What the dongle allows for

• Some firmware versions refuse 0x1184-0x118C outside passive mode. The dongle writes the timeout and the block first, then 0x1110 = 3, and tries again.
• A refused block waits 15 minutes, then 30, 60 and up to 6 hours.
• The dongle doesn't take over a passive mode it hasn't set itself.
• The ME 5-20KTL-3PH is AC-coupled without solar inputs. If it answers the solar registers with an exception, that counts as no sun.

How it differs from its neighbours

• Sofar HYD-EP: The single-phase HYD-EP is controlled the same way, but the battery's setup block is 16 registers instead of 19.

For the installer: the registers

What the dongle uses over Modbus, if you want to follow along or troubleshoot. Don't change the registers yourself while control is set to Automatic.

Control

Passive mode: 0x1110 = 3, and the setpoints in the block from 0x1187. Timeout in 0x1184 and 0x1185 = 1, so the inverter returns to its earlier mode if the dongle goes quiet.

Lowest charge level

The depth of discharge in 0x104D (100 minus your lowest charge level), written in the battery's setup block from 0x1044 with 0x1053 = 1.

Export limit

0x1023 (the installer's mode, never changed) and 0x1024 in 100 W, written together.

Rated power

0x06ED in 0.1 kW. Without it, the dongle doesn't control the export limit.

Sofar Solar hybrid is the inverter GridZeno has been tested on. Check that your model is under HYD 5-20KTL-3PH and ME 5-20KTL-3PH, and that a battery is fitted if you want the battery controlled by the electricity price. If it still doesn't suit you, you have 100 days' free return.
